SNPP VIIRS thermal infrared imagery showing sea ice

imageThis Suomi NPP VIIRS band I05 image captured on February 19, 2013 shows the utility of infrared imagery in identifying sea ice and open leads. The VIIRS I05 band is in the thermal infrared part of the spectrum (11.5 microns). In this image the “warm” open water (around 0 degrees C) is bright white. Compare to the cold (dark) land surface onshore.

This band was added to the GINA Feeder at the request of the NOAA National Ice Center to help them map and forecast ice using the best possible satellite data.

Support to provide these services comes from the NOAA-NESDIS JPSS and GOES-R program offices.
